Yakkity yak, don’t talk back.

A week ago today I had my wisdom teeth pulled out. I was smart enough to go to a place that would knock me out…thank goodness!
Everything went smoothly. I went in, they gave me an IV that the dr. proceeded to pump full of drugs. I laid my head back in the chair and woke up in a different room. My friend Katie stayed with me for the day. I was expecting something horrible but it was really easy. Besides the pain and the tiredness I think I’m healing pretty well.
Only one gross thing happened. When I arrived home I went to take the first dose of antibiotics. However my mouth was so numb I could barely tell if I swollowed the pills or not. I asked Katie to look and see and as I opened my mouth a trail of blood and sprite fell out of my mouth down my clothes and on to the floor. Oh so gross!
Any of you had your wisdom teeth out? What are your stories?

Haven’t had my wisdom teeth out (although one apparently is impacted, even though I can’t feel it) but I am highly resistant to anesthetic, which makes for a wonderful time whenever I have even minor dental work. The last time I had a cavity filled, the dentist had to to pump four needles full of novocaine into my jaw, and it still wasn’t completely numb, so when the drill hit my tooth nerve I could still feel it. So he stopped and shot me with another needle.
The anesthetic didn’t fully kick in until hours later, causing half of my face to go numb….right as I was having my driver’s license picture taken. (It was a New Hampshire license, which I promptly burned the second I moved back to Washington.)
If and when the wisdom tooth starts to hurt and I get it pulled, I will insist that they give me the nitrous. Either that, or I want to be completely unconscious.
Horrible experience. Most pain I’ve ever had — worse than any other surgery. I would wake up in the middle of the night post-surgery, my entire head throbbing from the blood flowing to my gums. Every bit of food felt like needles being shoved through my jaw. ugh. Terrible.
I would highly recommend being knocked out. Only way to go in my opinion.
Oh man KB that doesn’t sound good at all. I’m glad I didn’t have that.
That’s an awesome picture, dude. Drug induced stupor?
As you know, I’ve still got all my wisdom teeth. I’m hoping to hold on to them for as long as possible.
Congrats on filling my very soul with deep and abiding misery at the very mention of this proceedure. I gots four wisdom teeth and they’re all impacted and they all hurt and they are all starting to crowd my other teeth and I’m going to have to have them all out. Its been this way for about five years now. A casual observer might be inclined to suggest that I have been putting it off because I am afraid of the pain, but this is categorically UNTRUE. I have been waiting for a.) a boy who will take care of me post-op and b.) dental insurance.
I don’t wanna.
Glad to hear your extractions were mostly pain-free, though. I hate the game, not the player.
That was right after the incident. I had been home for about 15 minutes or so.
It isn’t the best thing in the world but if you need to get them out you should. I would wait for dental insurance though. Mine wasn’t cheap and I have insurance.
I was knocked out as well, and it was great. Closing my eyes and then feeling like I was opening them again a second later, but it was all over. The anesthesia made me very emotional though - as soon as I woke up I was kind of crying and asking for my friend. They dumped me off on him. The only negative was that, on the drive home, I started feeling nauseous, so he pulled over and I puked - all blood. That was pretty gross. But my friend was dedicated - he set timers and woke me up every 2 or 3 hours to give me meds or change my gauze. That’s love. It was a good 2 days of hazy drug-induced coddling.
Highly recommended! Gotta have the friend, though, for these results.
DM had his out when I was 13 or 14. Our mom took care of him, and she said he was very compliant and sweet. Hard to imagine, now.
Having someone to take care of you is key I think. My friend Katie stayed with me all day which is good. I didn’t need her but it was nice to know that if I did she was right there.
They knocked Katie out for her wisdom teeth but I was amazed how quickly it was over. They came out to talk to me after what felt like only 20 minutes. I thought at first that something must have gone wrong but they were only there to tell me that she was ready to go. She seemed fine to me as the dentist went over all of the follow on instructions (I think he noticed that I was only half listening so he stopped and reminded me that Katie may not remember anything he was saying so I better pay attention…oops). It wasn’t until we were walking down the hall that I looked back and noticed Katie was sliding along the wall so she could keep standing as she walked. Pretty funny stuff. I haven’t had any of my wisdom teeth out yet but will probably have to give in and have it done in the next year or so…definitely going with the ‘knock me out’ method!
