Yakkity yak, don’t talk back.

There’s a researcher in my field (info sci) who has been studying the info needs of female police officers going undercover as prostitutes. What do they need to know in order to blend in? … to feel safe, yet really pass as prostitutes? I thought about that research today when I ran across this product (on a shoe blog actually): GPS platforms, being marketed to sex workers.
It made me curious about the info world of sex workers – these shoes are obviously being marketed on the ‘Net. Do sex workers surf the web for supplies and products? Of course they do. And do they share web URLs with one another? Probably. Are there blogs and online magazines they read to keep up on the latest…? I bet.
You hear that everything is on the web. Sometimes I try to force my brain to think of things it would not think to look for. The idea that “You don’t know what you don’t know” has always made me crazy.

This could work for and against the hos. Obviously, it was originally designed to promote their safety, but what if someone gives them the shoes as a gift to monitor their comings and goings without their knowledge? The conversation might go something like this…
Pimp:”Were you at Joey’s last night?”
Ho: “You know I would never go near Joey again, Nicky baby.”
Pimp:”Stop lying biatch, I was tracking you through your hooker heels!”
Just kidding-I totally respect sex workers.
I think the shoes sound awesome! Sex workers might be new favorite phrase.
You didn’t google “sex worker blog”? Aren’t you dying to know?
I think in the US the shoes would be only about the safety – but in Norway, they are openly being marketed as something that can assist a busy sex worker with running her business.
I found lots of blogs that are about women talking about their work as a sex worker, but nothing yet that’s really one sex worker talking to another about the ‘ins and outs’ of the business. My goal is to find something really interesting and then for the first time ever (I think) to post a link for which I need to include the disclaimer NSFW
My research yielded similar results. Nothing about the ins and outs of the industry, but only blogs about day to day activities . . .
Those are some hideous looking shoes, though. I mean, people who think Payless is their own personal Mecca would be ashamed to be caught dead in them.
Although, in a twist on what I was thinking, I guess they’re meant to prevent people from being caught dead in them.
So: good idea, ugly execution. Wonder if Jonathan Ive does shoes? Give him a call.
