Crush List: Mid-Summer Edition

Well well well . . . here we are, two days from August. I don’t know about you kids, but so far my summer has proceeded swimmingly. Here’s what I’m crushing on:
- Wikipedia–I’m not really ramped up at my new job, yet. They keep telling me there’s tons of work just around the corner, but I’ve been here a month and a half yet, and have yet to see it. So, to while away the hours, I’ve been obsessively editing Wikipedia. Its a whole lotta fun, and a whole lotta work, but the benefits are tremendous(ly geeky). You can view my recent contributions here.
- Travel–It’s been a busy one for travel so far. I’ve been to Portland (and will go again this weekend), camping in the Cascades, a weekend on Hood Canal, and have trips coming up to Hawaii and LA.
- Big Love–Best show on television. Arrestingly, breathtakingly well done. My GOD I love this show.
- My new Keens.
- Mad Men–The premier was stronger than the second episode, but both were good nonetheless. There’s a lot of potential here–a 50s/60s period drama set against the alpha atmosphere of Wall Street, and informed by the gender and racial imbalances of the era. Vincent Kartheiser–Angel’s son–is in it; I love to hate him, and Mad Men gives me the opportunity.
On what are you crushing?

Awww… it makes me happy that you have a crush on Wikipedia. Am I supposed to be neutral about my research subject? Well… it may be wrong, but I have a crush on it, too.
Other crushes:
- Jeff Tweedy, as always – Sky Blue Sky is my kinda music. Mmmmm. Going to see Wilco in September. What will I wear?
- Ewan McGregor, as always – Just saw Miss Potter and thought it was lovely. It probably received awful reviews, but I stand by my thumbs-up.
- Minnesota, as always – one week until I get to spend one week in my favorite place in the world.
- My workplace – my favorite part of my job is planning our annual Tech Day – it’s this Thursday and it’s going to be a fun-filled day of practical and big picture, too. I am also thankful to my place of work for being flexible — starting in Sept, I am going to be down to 1/2 time for a while as I push through to finish my dissertation. Must – get – er – done.
- Weeds – I continue to enjoy this show. The new season is just around the corner and I have lots of catching up to do.
And then I have a thing that is not a crush but is more a “thing that makes me laugh” to add, too:
- News that Randy Moss will be joining the Patriots. Aaron has been so hard on Mr Moss over the years, esp when he was with my beloved Vikings. I am in the Randy fan club and think letting him go was a mistake. I think he’s going to SOAR like an EAGLE with Brady and Aaron is going to be including him on his crush list before the year is over.
Mad Men is AWESOME.. We’ll have to chatter about it, KB. I’m enjoying that show quite a bit.
Sky Blue Sky has grown on me immensely… I’ve been listening to it on an endless loop in my car, but now I feel like I should be driving a Volkswagen.. :]
I think Moss will have a big year, and the Pats will lose to my Seahawks in XLII :]
Weeds….re-watched some episodes with Toftie recently and we were still laughing out loud and loving it.
Training camp: Finally, news from Colts camp. Even if the news isn’t that great, at least it’s news.
Vacation: I’ll be in Sunriver with the clan next week and I’m busy planning a trip to Indy in Sept.
So You Think You Can Dance: I can’t believe I didn’t watch the previous seasons of the show.
My Boys: I’m hopelessy addicted to this show. It has its weaknesses, but I don’t care. I love it.
Guitar Hero 80s edition: Sure, it could use some better songs, but it’s got Poison, Warrant, and Winger. Rock on!
Department of Energy: I saw them at the Sunset on Friday night. The crowd was sparse, but they were great. Their albums are the soundtrack to my summer.
Kerry already said it but Training Camp – news and pictures means I have new things to email Kerry about every five minutes. Love it!
My new shoes made by Privo (by Clarks). They are so comfortable that it feels like I’m wearing slippers.
Nordstrom Anniversary sale – the reason I could afford new shoes.
Burn Notice – I love this show! Bruce Campbell is awesome and Jeffrey Donovan is crazy sexy!
I don’t care if Randy Moss catches 80 passes for 1,300 yards and 12 TDs this season and scores the winning touchdown in the AFC title game against the Colts. I’ll still think he’s a scumbucket.
Speaking of Minnesota: thanks, Kevin McHale! Your check from the Celtics is in the mail.
Crooked Little Vein-Warren Ellis. One chapter in, and it’s hit all the right fucked up Ellis notes.
The Android’s Dream-John Scalzi. 82 pages in and he’s doing dialog that I wish I could do so fluidly.
Deftones live; I got hit in the nose and punched in the kidney, (which I’m still feeling) but damn it was fun.
Whyfore you come down to Portland and not say something?
The new house. Pictures soon.
The girlfriend. She’s been awesome during this whole thing, and let’s face it; moving fucking blows.
Gothic Archies: The Tragic Treasury — Funny fake scary kids songs from Stephin Merritt, except for “Crows” which is truly frightening.
Elmore James: King of the Slide Guitar
White Stripes: Icky Thump
Apples in Stereo: New Magnetic Wonder
Ford Madox Ford: Parade’s End
Ratatoiulle
Icky Thump is the shizzle dizzle. Six albums in, and each time out I worry that this’ll be the year they run out of gas, and they never do. Jack White has catchy melodies and tasty riffs falling out of his ass. Also, I saw them in concert 11 days ago, and they rocked like 53 bastards.
Elmore James, given. Apples? Tried it, but it just never jelled. Haven’t heard the others.
