First of all, it won’t be Hillary… and judging from Obama’s little confrontation with Lieberman today, it won’t be anyone who’s been a douchebaggy namby-pamby capitulating Dem…
So what’s the short list? Here they are in alphabetical order:
Of course, it could be someone no one is thinking of right now. Particularly given that Obama won the Democratic nomination with an unconventional campaign, his VP selection probably won’t follow the conventional wisdom either.
I think Obama will.. duh… pick someone who he thinks would be a good president, and someone who would be a solid choice as a potential successor in 2016.
I’d like it to be Edwards. I think it will probably be Jim Webb. I’d be pissed if he gave it to Hagel, given the LARGE number of qualified Democrats out there.
What do you think, sirs?

Agreed that it won’t be Clinton. I bet he picks a crappy DINO like Webb.
Some recent polling (see various lefty blogs) shows that Edwards adds the most appeal to the ticket and and most electoral votes, therefore Edwards is my preference. He’s also comparatively young, charismatic and appealing, which would bolster Obama’s theme of change. Also, Edwards would be an appealing future presidential candidate.
Some critiques of the others:
–Biden has already expressed interest in SoS, which would suit him well.
–Casey is pro-life and a nearly a DINO, and as a new senator is “inexperienced”.
–Edwards has expressed a disinterest in Veep, and seemingly wants AG.
–Dodd is a small-stater and would be too old for Pres in eight years.
–Gore has expressed utter disinterest and is busy with his TV network, lucrative board positions and climate change activism.
–Hagel is a Republican (fer cryin’ out loud!!) and would be 69 in eight years.
–Napolitano is single, which never goes over well in national politics.
–Richardson is Latino. Two minorities on the ticket would be awesome IMO, but would probably be perceived as alienating too many middle class white folks.
–Sebelius is also more or less a DINO, coming from such a red state, and might come across as a mother figure (Obama’s mom was also an older white lady from Kansas).
–Webb is a former Republican and completely uninspiring DINO, and alleged to be dud on the campaign trail.
There’s also some talk about MT Gov. Schweitzer, although he seems content so far to consolidate Dem gains in MT and run for reelection.
I also give a fair percent chance to “none of the above” – he might surprise us with a completely novel candidate, such the mayor of a major city, a congressperson or a business leader. This could be appealing to his supporters who find the “change” message inspiring (which I don’t, personally – I just find it to be good marketing).
Obama/Edwards ‘08!!
I sure hope it is Edwards, I think he’d make a marginal positive difference in terms of getting elected (no VP choice has ever been decisive in a US Presidential Election), but I agree with you on the bigger points
1. He’s young and charismatic
2. He’d, you know, be a good President someday.
Schweitzer is an interesting idea… There’s also the boys from Ohio… Strickland and Sherrod Brown… But I don’t see either of them getting chosen either.
If Gore showed ANY interest in the job, I think he’d be a great choice.
Gore would definitely add gravitas and massive amounts of cash to the campaign. By far my favorite option if he hadn’t already repeatedly turned it down publicly. Bonus: President Gore in ‘16.
Obama/Oprah ‘08!
Id like to see Web but it won’t be because of his views on women… This would be a bad thing right now.
I like Edwards but I don’t think his metro$exual haircuts are going to do Obama any favors either.
Richardson would add a lot of value to the campaign… But Sebelius would do even better.
Hagel would be an awesome mindblower… Talk about building bridges!
There is also Gov. Evan Bayh of Indiana…
My $2 is on Sebelius.
I have mixed feelings about Webb. He’s an ex-Reagan guy who I assume is somewhat hawkish, but I also hear that he’s pretty liberal on economic issues. The other thing to keep in mind is that it might cost us a Senate seat in Virginia.
I like Edwards too, obviously, and one of the other positive things about picking him would be that he wouldn’t cost us a Senate seat or other high office.
I’ve heard good things about Richardson and Sibelius. Richardson would almost certainly deliver New Mexico for us, would bring out the Hispanic vote, and would probably be a big plus in western states like Colorado and Nevada.
I also would have to say that I have a soft spot for Chris Dodd, though I don’t think he’s going to get the nom.
Chirs Dodd is a truly decent Human being with lots of experience in DC. These are not easy qualities to find. He would be a good choice but sadly wouldn’t deliver as much as Richardson.
Mark: Webb is AWESOME! He was a Republican and switched because they ultimately make him want to puke. He is a highly decorated veteran with lots of political experience… When at the White House he actually told GWB where he could shove Iraq (his son is there). I respect Webb. Sadly he has also made some derogatory statements about women’s issues (i.e., he brushes off the Tail Hook scandal as boys will be boys). This aspect is not so awesome, and that’s too bad. I wonder if he has changed any on this?
