Peeps. The upgrade and installation of the new theme are complete. A few things that are awesome:

• Flickr — if your pictures are added to the Bunch of Us pool on Flickr, they will get exposure in the sidebar.
• Links — we now have a proper blogroll. You should be able to add your own link in the admin section.
• Avatars — sign up for the Gravatar service to manage your own Gravatar. These are already implemented for comments; I’ll be implementing them for posts in the coming weeks. If you want to access your old avatar and use that, you can grab it from our images folder.
• Polls — I’m now trying to run a weekly poll. You can find this week’s over in the sidebar.
• Tags — Wordpress 2.5 brings tags more front and center, so when you create a post, make sure to tag it! (and continue to categorize!)
• Excerpt — no need to write excerpta anymore, as we’re displaying full posts on the front page now.

Peeps, there’s a new version of Wordpress out, to which I would like to upgrade this blog. Before I do that, though, I’d like to get your feedback on visual design. I think it’s time for a new look. We’ve had this one for over two years, and it’s no longer compatible with some of the plugins we’ve come to rely on (threaded comments, most notably). Plus, change is fun. So, what I’d like is for you to suggest any template you want to come under consideration. Then we’ll vote. Waddya say? Here are some places to start viewing templates:

IE7 is slated to drop sometime this month dropped about an hour after I wrote this, which will have a huge impact on the web design world. Of course, this site is optimized for FireFox (we like our customers — see graphic below), but that doesn’t mean we will ignore those who choose to throw their lot in with an inferior product.

I’ve already checked this site in IE7, and the browser breaks the layout. So I’ll be fixing that. But I thought I’d take this opportunity to ask you, fine readers/writers, what do you want? More graphics? Fancy widgets? More posts per page? More columns per page? Cigars all around? Different avatars? What?

Yup, we have them. This will let you reply to a specific comment inline, Livejournal-style, rather than add it to the heap pile at the end. Let me know if you have any problems.

So, a few things:

1. I had to turn up the spam filters, as a few have slipped through. I know that early on there were some false positives. We’re running a new version of Spam Karma, so some of those problems have been fixed. Let me know if your comments are eaten.
2. I’ve been working on a hack to let you use HTML in your author page, so you can things like links to Flickr or the like. So far, no luck, though I’ll keep working on it.
3. The about page now includes links to our Frappr, Last.fm, and Flickr groups. Yay!
4. What else do you want on this site?

The ranks of A Bunch Of Us continue to swell exponentially by the day. In a moment of boredom inspiration, I thought it would be cool to see where all everyone calls home, so I went to Frappr and created this map. If you’re so inclined, go stick a pin on the map, upload a pic (either your avatar or something odder) and say something pithy. Perhaps Kables would even consider placing a link to the map somewhere on tha site? Wink wink nudge nudge…
