Today is my friend (and Kerry’s) Judy’s birthday!  I know she reads this blog periodically so I wanted to drop her a birthday wish.

Sexing Up the Library!

Mud Flap GirlThere has recently been of rash of sexed-up marketing in the library world. A few weeks ago, Wyoming Libraries caused quite a stir in the profession (both pro and con) with their “Mud Flap Girl” marketing campaign. This week, two additional sexed-up marketing campaigns have been revealed by American Libraries magazine. First, a personal crusade by a youth services librarian in Bend, Oregon who skates for the the Lava City Roller Dolls team “12-Gauge Rage,” under the name “Dame Deviant.” She sports a sign on the backside of her uniform that reads, “Support Libraries.” Nicely Done! Next was a story about marketing the Penn State Altoona’s Eiche Library. The library staff decided to sponsor a booth at the school’s annual health fair. They wore wore bright blue, “Sex On Campus” T-Shirts, and gave away hundreds of condoms over the course of the event. It was such a successful community outreach project, that they intend to double the number of laptops they brought for next year because so many people wanted to take the interactive sex quiz that the librarians crafted. Rock On!

Last night was the Justin Timberlake concert.  It was really awesome!  The only thing I didn’t like was Good Charlotte opening for him. They seemed really out of place.

Here is my top 10 of the show:

10. Meeting up with other Justin fans before the show and getting a drink…Erin it was good to see you and meet your sisters.

9. Seats. The stage was in the middle with the seats around the stage and that made for a better concert experience. There was stuff happening on all sides of the stage.

8. Finding out Jeana and Mara were sitting not to far from us. We could look at each other during the show and it was like we went together.

7. Parking downtown.. We parked further downtown in Tacoma instead of close the the Tacoma Dome. That was super smart of us to do because we missed the traffic.

6. Justin Program. It was $15 but worth it. Tons of pictures of JT and a set list which is nice to look back at later when I’m old and can’t remember what he sang.

5. Show. The show was amazing, with backup dancers and singers and a band. There were a lot of people in the show.

4. Bringing Justin to the stage in a box/bin. Before the show started the singers and dancers were coming out of the back room and people were freaking out. We were sitting where you could see them coming out. Funny thing was that there were tons of people standing there waiting for Justin to come out. Then most of the performers had come through there was a bin on wheels with a lid that came through with 2-3 security or stage hands around it. It obviously had Justin in it but yet here these girls stood waiting and screaming for Justin. It would have ruined everything if he came out before the show when his whole thing was coming up from the bottom of the stage…ah teenagers.

3. Screens. There were these see through screens that would come down on the stage depending on which section of the stage Justin was on which was awesome because you could still see everything going on.

2. Singing and dancing. Two of my favorite things if you know me. I loved every minute of it.

1. The best thing about the JT concert…him singing Dick in a Box. That’s right he sang it near the end of the show which was freaking awesome. We were doing all the hand movements and everything. When he started singing the song that might have been the loudest it was all night and it was really loud all night.

So yes, the show was awesome, Justin was awesome and I didn’t get arrested for attacking him!

Specifically in the Tacoma News-Tribune… Pretty cool, no?

If anyone out there feels like buying a copy of today’s paper and sending it to me, that would RAWK.

  • With this Funk I Thee Wed

Well kids, I am happy to report that Saturday’s wedding went off without a hitch. The weather was perfect, the Special Lady Friend was gorgeous, I only fucked up one line during the ceremony (which wasn’t a crucial one, and made everyone laugh), the reception (a lighthouse cruise around Casco Bay) was awesome, we ordered so much extra food that I’ve been gorging myself on lobster rolls for three straight days, everybody made drunken idiots of themselves in the Old Port bars afterwards (of which much photographic evidence exists)…and a rookie pitcher for the Red Sox threw a no-hitter. The only thing that could’ve possibly made the evening better would be if the Yankees had also lost, but hey, nobody ever said the world was perfect.

“Bla bla bla, yadda yadda yadda,” you’re all saying. “Dude, what we really want to know is: how much metal did you sneak into the song mix for the reception?”

Alas, the answer to that question is “None.” As I put together the track list for the mix, I tried and tried to find some wedding-appropriate metal to stick in there, but nothing seemed to fit. So instead, I just stuck to a general theme of “Funk, With the Occasional Curveball.” Of course, the Special Lady Friend had to have her mellow folk-rock in there too, so she picked all the slow songs while I concentrated on the jams.

I used a couple of artists twice when I just couldn’t decide on one representative track, although frankly, Stevie Wonder could’ve been in the mix six or seven times and it still wouldn’t have been enough. My only regret is that I couldn’t justify more White Stripes tunes in the mix. Jack White may have catchy melodies and tasty riffs falling out of his ass, but their stuff just isn’t danceable. Ah, well.

    Without further ado, the tracklist:

Jay Howell is an artist. Dude is crazy. He made this thing:

It made me laugh. It also made me want to animate more. I spent a small amount of time at evergreen on an animation project and truly enjoyed it. Has anyone else messed around with stop motion or anything of the like? Flip books in middle school?

  • Beer Fest ‘07!

That’s right, kids, Beer Fest is upon us again. In fact, its sooner than you think for the Seattle crew. Beer Fest runs this weekend at the Seattle Center. Dinibop, Toftie, myself, and a crew of others will be there Friday afternoon, and we expect the rest of you to join us (Aaron, I’m looking at you).

“What is Beer Fest?” you ask. Well, it’s a magical heaven where the finest Belgian beers are flown in by magical fairy monks and given to those fortunate enough to pay the reasonable entry fee. A select few (aka “those that leave work early”) are chosen to enter before 5PM, which means 50% more beer for the same low low price.

Again, “what is Beer Fest?” you ask. “Beer Fest is Seattle’s Elysian Fields,” I answer, with a wink toward the sky.

I’m so fortunate, in fact, that I might just be in Portland during its celebration, and so I may, if all parties involved are liberal and understanding, be able to attend twice this summer. Double the awesomeness! As Diniboppersonpalooza says, “BOO YAH!”

    Now, the benediction.

“Dear Beer Gods. Please do not let us this year repeat the foul incident of last year, whereby one amongst our flock did lose his coffee out the realtor’s car, thus soiling the driveway of some fine Queen Anne resident. Lord, please do not let us be tempted by the burning water hawked by Tini Big’s, nor the non-Belgian swill peddled by McMennamin’s. (Brent, my apologies.) Yaweh, may we remember to stay hydrated and to take a cab home. Amen.”

    Amen.
